On September 30, 2013, WWE Monday Night Raw aired its 39th episode of the 2013 season. The episode featured several anticipated matches and storylines leading up to the next Pay-Per-View event.
The show began with WWE Champion Randy Orton making his way to the ring. He addressed the crowd, gloating about his victory over Daniel Bryan at the previous Pay-Per-View, Night of Champions. He proclaimed himself as the greatest wrestler in WWE history and declared that no one could take his championship away from him.
Orton was interrupted by Authority member Brad Maddox, who announced that Orton would be defending his championship against Daniel Bryan in a rematch at the upcoming Pay-Per-View, Battleground. Orton was visibly angry and refused to participate, but Maddox warned him that if he did not comply, he would be stripped of his championship.
The first match of the night was a tag team match between The Shield (Dean Ambrose and Roman Reigns) and the team of Dolph Ziggler and Rob Van Dam. The match was competitive, with both teams showing off their athleticism and teamwork. Ultimately, The Shield proved to be too much for their opponents, and they defeated Ziggler and Van Dam with their signature triple powerbomb.
Next, Fandango made his way to the ring with his dance partner Summer Rae. He announced that he would be facing off against wrestler Santino Marella, but just as the match was about to begin, Marella's former tag team partner, The Great Khali, made his return to WWE and joined Marella in the ring. Fandango attempted to attack both of his opponents, but they were able to overpower him and win the match.
In a backstage segment, Paul Heyman was shown talking with his newest client, Ryback. Heyman boasted about his plans to make Ryback the WWE Champion and challenged any wrestler on the Raw roster to face him in the ring.
The third match of the night was a singles match between Divas champion AJ Lee and Naomi. The two women displayed impressive athleticism and acrobatics throughout the match, but ultimately AJ was able to retain her championship by making Naomi tap out to her Black Widow submission hold.
In another backstage segment, former WWE Champion CM Punk was shown being interviewed about his feud with Paul Heyman and Ryback. Punk promised to defeat Heyman once and for all, but he was interrupted by Ryback, who attacked him from behind and threw him into a nearby pile of equipment.
The next match was a tag team match between The Usos and the newly formed team of Prime Time Players (Titus O'Neil and Darren Young). The Usos dominated early in the match, but the Prime Time Players were able to bounce back and secure the victory after O'Neil pinned one of the Usos.
In a special appearance, legendary wrestler Shawn Michaels made his way to the ring to speak with the crowd. He announced that he would be the special guest referee for the upcoming WWE Championship match between Randy Orton and Daniel Bryan at Battleground.
The main event of the night was a singles match between CM Punk and Ryback. The two wrestlers showed off their impressive strength and athleticism, but the match came to a sudden end when Paul Heyman interfered and hit Punk with a low blow. Ryback took advantage of the distraction and hit Punk with his signature Shell Shocked finishing move, pinning him for the victory as the show went off the air.
Overall, the 39th episode of the 2013 season of WWE Monday Night Raw showcased some of the best wrestlers in the world and set the stage for the upcoming Battleground Pay-Per-View.
