Godzilla: The Original Animated Series was produced by Hanna-Barbera in cooperation with Toho and was simultaneously shown in the US on NBC and in Japan on TV Tokyo in 1978 to 1981. The series was an animated adaptation of the characters and some situations from the original Toho Godzilla films including many new characters. Following the adventures of a team of scientists on the hydrofoil research vessel, the Calico, the crew is accompanied by Godzooky, Godzilla's goofy coward cousin and the lead scientist's nephew's best friend. Unlike Godzilla, Godzooky can fly; however, whenever he tries to immitate his bigger cousin and breathe fire (yes, Godzilla only breathes fire in this series, no trademark nuclear breath), he usually fails in a humorous manner. Frequently getting into danger through their adventures (often under attack by other Kaiju) the team can call Godzilla using a special communicator or with Godzooky's plaintive cry. Produced rather in the vein of Johnny Quest meets Scooby-Doo, there is much action and comedic mischief to be had from these lighthearted additions to the classic Godzilla lineup.
