Welcome to Hell is the very first episode of the first season of Your Pretty Face Is Going to Hell, a live-action comedy television series that first aired back in 2013. The show is loosely based on the idea of Hell and its rulers and features a unique blend of humor, horror, and satire.
The opening scene introduces us to our protagonist, a lazy and selfish demon named Gary, who is more interested in women, drugs, and rock 'n' roll than his job in Hell. As he sits on his throne, smoking a cigarette, he is called out by his boss, Satan, who reminds him that he has to go to Earth and steal a soul. Gary reluctantly agrees and is then sent to the human world.
Once in the human world, Gary assumes the identity of a human telemarketer, hoping to find and influence a weak-willed individual to sell their soul to Satan. Gary’s comical attempts at selling Hell’s products provide much-needed humor. However, his usual tricks – such as making exaggerated claims and lying about the product’s benefits – don't seem to work on anyone.
Frustrated and grief-stricken, Gary turns to his new colleague, Claude, who disdainfully looks down on his inadequate methods and shows him how to seal deals with humans by using more subtle and persuasive tactics. We see a sudden, albeit shaky improvement in Gary’s sales – until a human employee exposes him to a potential customer, revealing his true identity as a demon, and all his hard work is for naught.
Defeated, Gary returns to Hell where he faces Satan's wrath for his failure. Surprisingly, however, Gary's plan to quit is dismissed; instead, Satan believes that Gary's incompetence could be useful. He conjures up a new task for Gary – to design and produce a new kind of torture mechanism for Hell. This punishment is for an individual who is a savvy, extremely successful businessman who has evaded Hell his entire life. Gary, humbled and motivated, jumps at the chance to prove himself and embarks on his very first “torture project,” which ends up being chaotic, hilarious, and disastrous.
The episode ends by setting the foundations for a climactic battle between coworkers who are competing for a high position in Hell's hierarchy, and for control over the gates to Hell itself.
Overall, Welcome to Hell is a perfect introduction to the show – it's a witty and original take on the afterlife, filled with hilarious characters and amusing, cringe-worthy situations. The episode sets up the main narrative arc and character dynamics that the show will use to explore the human condition and Hell’s inner workings in future episodes.
