The show Law & Order: CI is a crime drama series that explores complex criminal investigations and prosecutions with focus on the criminal justice system in the United States. Season 1 episode 21 titled 'Faith' follows the story of a young woman who is murdered in a church, leaving the detectives to investigate the case while also grappling with their own beliefs.

The episode begins with a shot of a church where a choir is rehearsing. Suddenly, a shot is heard, and everyone screams and runs for cover. The detectives arrive on the scene and are shocked to find the lifeless body of a young woman who has been shot in the head. The victim is identified as Sarah Lancaster, a close-knit member of the church community who also worked at a local homeless shelter.

As the detectives delve into the case, their investigation uncovers a web of secrets and lies within the church. The church's pastor and elders reveal that Sarah was suspected of being involved in a sexual relationship with the church's youth pastor, Reverend Darnell Potter. The detectives interview Potter, who denies any involvement and claims that he and Sarah were just good friends.

Detective Goren and Eames, however, are intrigued by Potter's unusually close relationship with the victim. They learn that Potter had been counseling Sarah in the aftermath of her difficult childhood and her addiction to drugs. Potter admits to them that he had become emotionally attached to Sarah and had begun to see her as a symbol of redemption and hope.

As the detectives continue to investigate, they discover that Sarah's past is more complicated than they anticipated. She had been abandoned by her parents as a young child and had grown up in foster care. As a teenager, she had become addicted to drugs and had turned to prostitution to support her habit.

The investigation takes a dark turn when the victim's estranged father, who is also a drug dealer, is identified as a potential suspect. The detectives follow leads to track down the father, who it is revealed had been trying to extort money from the church in exchange for not releasing evidence that would implicate Potter.

While interrogating Potter, the detectives notice his sudden obsession with religious terms and the devil. This drives Goren to dig deep to find that Potter had also been battling his own demons, making the detectives even more sure of his involvement in the case.

In the end, Goren and Eames discover the evidence they needed in order to make an arrest. They confront Potter, who finally confesses to the murder. He reveals that he had been battling his own religious doubts and emotionally raw guilt over Sarah's drug use and addiction. Potter had killed Sarah in a fit of rage, convinced that she was beyond redemption.

With the killer finally brought to justice, Goren and Eames are left to ponder the darker side of faith and redemption that had driven Potter to commit such a heinous act. The episode poses the question, does faith make individuals do anything possible?
