Ep 4. Downton Abbey 6: Episode 3

  • January 17, 2016

As the third episode of the final season of Downton Abbey, episode 3 of season 6 of Masterpiece's beloved historical drama brings viewers back to Yorkshire, England, in the year 1925. The Crawley family and their employees at the Downton Abbey estate are facing a rapidly changing society with new ideas and technologies that threaten their traditional way of life.

The episode begins with the return of Miss Denker, the Dowager Countess's troublesome lady's maid, who has been away to care for a sick aunt. Her reappearance immediately causes tension between herself and her fellow staff members, particularly Spratt, who is still holding a grudge against her after her last visit. Meanwhile, Daisy, the assistant cook, is still struggling with her decision to pursue an education and a better life outside of Downton Abbey.

Upstairs, Lord Grantham receives an unexpected visit from his cousin Simon Bricker, who is still nursing a crush on Lady Cora. Their flirtation takes a dramatic turn, leading to consequences that affect the entire household. At the same time, Lady Mary's love life takes a new turn when she receives a visit from a suitor from her past.

As always, the Dowager Countess remains a source of both wit and wisdom. In this episode, she dispenses advice to her son, Robert, on how to handle Simon Bricker's advances. She also intervenes in the ongoing feud between Denker and Spratt, much to the amusement of the other staff members.

But it's not all fun and games at Downton Abbey. The changing times are knocking at the door, and the Crawley family struggles to keep up. Robert is facing financial difficulties due to the changing agricultural landscape, and members of the staff are worried about their jobs. In particular, Mr. Carson, the butler, faces a challenge to his traditional authority when the family hires a new footman who is more interested in modern methods than in old-fashioned service.

As always, the show's production values are impeccable, with costumes and sets that transport viewers back to the 1920s. The performances of the cast, led by Hugh Bonneville, Elizabeth McGovern, and Dame Maggie Smith, are as excellent as always. Meanwhile, the writing by Julian Fellowes continues to balance drama, romance, and humor with ease.

Fans of Downton Abbey will not be disappointed by this episode, which continues to delve into the complex lives of the Crawley family and their staff. Those who have never watched the show before may find themselves drawn in by the excellent acting, lush visuals, and rich historical detail. Whether you're a long-time fan or a newcomer, episode 3 of season 6 of Masterpiece's Downton Abbey is not to be missed.
