A Stranger Among Us is about a New york homicide detective who goes undercover in order to investigate a murder of a diamond-cutter. In order to best solve the crime, she must live with the family of an elderly Holocaust survivor. He has compassion towards his fellow Jewish people and tells Emily that they are too familiar with evil, and it eventually affects the soul. As Emily lives with the family, she becomes friends with the son, who is a young man working as a diamond-cutter but also teaches in the yeshiva and is expected to follow in his father's footsteps. He is also expected to wait for his intended bride, who is the daughter of a Paris rebbe, and he's never met her. In their culture, they must be the subjects of arranged marriages. However, he believes that his intended is actually his soul mate, as chosen by God. He must keep all 613 Mitzvot and is also studying the Kabbalah. This outlines how he must follow sexual intimacy, as well as it being a metaphor for a relationship between Man and God. As the story unfolds, Emily finds out that the "inside man" is an adopted daughter who had lived a sad life until she was introduced to this family. She joined into the community, commonly known the "one who has returned." However, someone approached her and she let him in to steal $750,000 worth of diamonds and to kill. Emily figures all of this out and wants to arrest the girl as an accessory to the murder, or even perhaps the murder itself. However, when Emily returns to the home, she finds that this girl has taken another family member hostage. After a negotiation, the son shoots the young lady with Emily's gun.
