In this brilliant Nicolas Cage film, a screenwriter named Charlie Kaufman feverishly works on the adaptation of the novel "The Orchid Thief." Painfully insecure and awkward, Charlie also avoids acting on his feelings for a woman who makes no bones about her affection for him. Meanwhile, Charlie's inability to complete the script and express his romantic interest are made even worse by his bumbling, less talented twin brother's ability to dive into writing -- and life in general -- with abandon. We gain added insight into Charlie's character through his self-loathing, paranoid thoughts. The movie dissects the problems that come with attempting to create "high art," contrasted by the carefree happiness of someone who creates without filtering his work or thoughts due to concern for artistic purity. There's plenty of drama and action along the way, ensuring that this meta-tinged food for thought is one tasty morsel.
