The horror film An American Haunting was based on the novel The Bell Witch: An American Haunting. This movie was produced, written and directed by Courtney Solomon. Its all-star cast includes Donald Sutherland, Sissy Spacek, James D'Arcy and Rachel Hurd-Wood. The novel was based on true events and has received validation of the facts from the state of Tennessee. The movie begins with a newly divorced mother and her young daughter moving into a Victorian home in Red River, Tennessee. On the mantel is an antique photograph of Lucy Bell and Richard Powell. She inherited this house and is a direct descendent of the famous Bell family. Her daughter decides to explore her new house and wanders into the attic. There she finds an antique doll that belonged to Betsy Bell and a handwritten journal. Delighted with her discovers she decides to bring them into her bedroom. Almost instantly, the young girl starts having nightmares. Desperate to find the answer, she carefully checks her daughter's bedroom and comes across the journal that was found in the attic. The journal is written by her ancestor Lucy Bell in 1817. Lucy was married to John Bell and with the help of his church he wins a dispute over land. The woman he had gone up against was known within the town to be a witch and when she lost it was said she put a curse on the Bell family. Immediately strange occurrences began and their daughter Betsy was being attacked overnight. Trying to find rational answers Lucy Bell even requested the help of Betsy's school teacher Richard Powell, a family friend James Johnston and her brother John Bell. Nothing they tried ever removed the entity from the house. But as she continues to read the journal the answer to the haunting became obvious. She then realized that the horror that tortured her ancestors was now living in the lives of her and her daughter.
