The starring roles are played by Peter O'Toole as King Henry II and Richard Burton as Thomas Becket. The movie tells the story of the conflict between King Henry II and Thomas Becket. It is set in 12th century England about one hundred years after the Norman Conquest. The native Saxons are oppressed by their Norman conquerors. Becket is a Saxon and King Henry is Norman but they are best of friends. Becket is appointed Lord Chancellor by King Henry and this sets the stage for the eventual conflict that follows.
