The Robe is a Biblical epic film that stars Richard Burton as Marcellus Gallio, a tribune who is in charge of the group that was assigned to crucify Jesus. The 1953 film won the Golden Globe for Best Picture and Academy Awards for Best Art Direction, Color and Best Costume Design, Color. The film was also nominated for a Best Picture Academy Award and Burton received a Best Actor nomination. The Robe is set in ancient Rome during the years 32 A.D. to 38 A.D. Marcellus wins Jesus' robe in a dice game. He is tormented by his role in Jesus' death and haunted by nightmares of the crucifixion. Believing that he has been cursed by the robe, Marcellus returns to Palestine to learn more about the man he helped put to death.
