Being There is political satire and dark comedy of the highest order, featuring the legendary Peter Sellers, Shirley MacLaine, Jack Warden and Melvyn Douglas. Sellers earned a Best Actor Academy Award nomination for his portrayal of Chance the Gardener, while Douglas won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor. Chance is a simple, middle-aged gardener who finds himself thrust into the highest levels of the U.S. Government quite accidentally following an automobile accident on the streets of Washington, D.C. The extent of his education and experience revolves around gardening and watching television, but his innocence and simple solutions to any and all problems are misinterpreted as supreme political wisdom, earning him celebrity status and fame. He becomes a trusted adviser to the President (Warden), and is even considered a potential nominee for the office himself. Throughout it all, Chance remains the simple gardener, unaware of the influence and repercussions his gardening tips are causing, not only in the White House, but all across the nation. Being There was adapted from Jerzy Kosinski's same-titled book and was directed by Hal Ashby. The film is also notable for being Sellers' final film to be released prior to his death in July, 1980.
