Bird is the thirteenth full length feature film directed by Clint Eastwood. In the dramatized biography, the life of one of American music's most influential figures is highlighted. Forest Whitaker plays Charlie "Bird" Parker the saxophonist extraordinaire. Bird's common-law wife Chan, is portrayed by Diane Venora. A supporting cast including Samuel E. Wright as the trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie, and Damon Whitaker as the young "Bird" Parker is also assembled. In 1940, Charlie "Bird" Parker moves to the big city to find work. The local jazz crowd quickly recognizes his unique saxophone style and offers him a chance to play popular stages. Like familiar musical personalities such as Ray Charles and Stevie Wonder, "Bird" Parker is completely blind. He struggles to find inroads to the elite jazz world, and discovers what being a popular superstar in racially-charged Golden Age America is all about. Bird is also known by the official script title, "Yardbird Suite."
