Breakheart Pass is a U.S. adventure western movie that was written by Alistair MacLean and directed by Tom Gries. The main cast includes Charles Bronson as Deakin, Ben Johnson as Pearce, Jill Ireland as Marica, Richard Crenna as Governor Fairchild, Charles Durning as O'Brien and David Huddleston as Dr. Molyneux. The film begins in north central Idaho 1870s as troops and medical supplies are on their way to a far away fort to confront a diphtheria epidemic. Along with the troops led by Major Claremont (played by Ed Lauter), civilian passengers and the Nevada governor Fairchild (played by Richard Crenna) and mistress, Marica (played by Jill Ireland) are also on the train. A notorious gambler arrives (played by Charles Bronson) and is soon recognized due to the fact that he is wanted. He becomes apprehended by the sheriff (played by Ben Johnson) and they board the train over the Commander's objections. Marcia is the only woman on board and the only person who has compassion for prisoner to be treated humanely. Suddenly, it is also discovered that there is a murderer aboard the train. Things start to go awry when he gets loose. The gambler has been medically trained. As a result, he is released from the confines so that he can help the situation. On the way, another horrific accident decimates the troop and the gambler does his own investigating. Gradually, he is able to uncover a conspiracy that involves more people aboard the train. Apparently, their motives are not all as they seem. The gambler checks into the medical supply cargo and finds that there is a strong possibility that they have been compromised. The trip has actually been routed to the wrong destination in an effort to thwart the mission. It is also discovered that the real mission is false. There is no epidemic and the troops have actually been enlisted to help a group of killers to attack Indian tribes.
