As the highly anticipated sequel to the 1988 smash hit Coming to America, Coming 2 America picks up many years after the original film's story left off. The film is a comedic extravaganza that audiences have been eagerly waiting for since the announcement of its release. The plot of Coming 2 America is built around Prince Akeem (Eddie Murphy), who has now become King and is living in Zamunda with his wife Lisa (Shari Headley) and their three daughters. When Akeem discovers that he has a long-lost son in Queens, New York, he sets out on a new adventure, along with his right-hand man Semmi (Arsenio Hall), to track him down and bring him back to Zamunda.
The audience is quickly re-introduced to the loveable characters from the first film, with the addition of some exciting new ones, as the story moves from New York City to the fictional African country of Zamunda. Along the way, there are plenty of laughs, familiar faces, and rehashed scenarios from the first movie that fans of the original will enjoy.
As Akeem and Semmi's journey takes them to New York, they are greeted with some familiar faces from the first movie. Unfortunately, their search is not as simple as they'd hoped, and they find themselves struggling in a new world where the customs and traditions of their homeland are foreign to everyone they encounter.
The humor comes fast and furious in Coming 2 America, with the dialogue and physical comedy serving as the primary sources of laughs. There are moments of genuine warmth and sincerity, especially as Akeem begins to bond with his newly discovered son, Lavelle (Jermaine Fowler). The on-screen chemistry between Murphy and Fowler is excellent, and they have some touching and funny moments together that really make the film special.
One of the standout performances in the movie comes from Wesley Snipes, who plays General Izzi, the antagonist of the film. Snipes brings a lot of energy to his role, and he's clearly having a lot of fun with his over-the-top portrayal of the character. The dynamic between Snipes and Murphy in their scenes together is one of the highlights of the film.
As far as the overall pacing and structure of the movie are concerned, Coming 2 America's plot is straightforward and rather predictable, yet still immensely amusing. However, the film's frequent callbacks to its predecessor can be a bit heavy-handed and occasionally feel like pandering to fans. That being said, the return of so many recognizable faces from the first movie should entertain fans who have been eagerly waiting for it.
The film's production design and costumes do an excellent job at bringing Zamunda to life once again, with the same dazzling colors, intricate clothing, and majestic scenery that made the original film so visually stunning. It's clear that the filmmakers put a lot of effort into creating a believable world that feels both familiar and new.
Overall, Coming 2 America is a hilarious and enjoyable sequel to the '80s classic. While the script isn't wholly original, the charm and energy of Murphy, Hall, and the rest of the cast make it a fun ride from start to finish. If you were a fan of the first movie, you'll undoubtedly enjoy the second one.
