Death Becomes Her is a supernatural fantasy involving two women played by Goldie Hawn and Meryl Streep. The story revolves around the highly competitive relationship the two women have with each other. This is heightened when Helen's plastic surgeon and fiancé Ernest, is entranced with her competitive best friend Madeline. The first part of the story revolves around the relationship Helen has with Ernest, which is beginning to deteriorate. At the same time, Madeline's relationship with Ernest appears to be thriving. Madeline ends up marrying Ernest, while Helen ends up in a mental institution planning to get revenge. As years pass, Madeline's marriage is less than perfect, and Helen becomes an acclaimed author. The underlying theme to this movie is the lengths these two women will go to in order to remain attractive and still in demand. They have plastic surgery and use spa treatments to help them retain their youthful appearance. While at one of the spas, Madeline receives the business card of a woman known to turn back the hands of time. Some time passes before Madeline actually pays a visit to the strange woman. When she finally does, she is given a potion to drink which is guaranteed to give her everlasting beauty and youth. The woman does warn Madeline about the dangers of not taking care of her body after drinking the potion. Through a series of events, Helen has also paid a visit to the same mysterious woman and has consumed the same potion. The second half of the story involves Helen's plot to kill Madeline with the help of her now estranged husband Ernest. What happens when Ernest tries to kill Madeline is the discovery that she cannot be killed. The same turns out to be true for Helen, because both women have consumed the same life-extending potion. Through their constant battles, the women end up disfigured and deformed, but never dead.
