This drama-thriller follows Jennifer Lopez, Slim, a young waitress. While at work, Slim meets Mitch Hiller. The two start dating, get married and have a daughter, Gracie. Several years pass and Slim discovers Mitch is having an affair. When she confronts him he becomes violent and hits her, and states he will not end the affair. The following day, hiding a black eye, Slim confides in her friend Ginny from her waitressing days. Ginny tells Slim that she should leave him, but Slim is not convinced. Upon arriving at Gracie's school Slim is told that Mitch already picked her up and goes home in a panic, and that night she decides she will leave him. Slim makes her escape a few days later with the help of her friends. They are caught briefly by Mitch, who has a gun, but make it out. Mitch cuts off Slim's access to their bank accounts and relentlessly tracks her down. Slim takes Gracie to Seattle to stay with her ex-boyfriend Joe. They are soon bombarded by two of Mitch's friends pretending to be FBI agents and Joe's apartment is left in shambles. Slim leaves Seattle for San Francisco to seek out her estranged father, Jupiter. Jupiter denies he is her father. Defeated, Slim takes Gracie to live in Michigan where they are put up by friends of a friend. She receives a package of money from Jupiter soon after, and a note stating his interest was sparked when two men gruffly threatened him in relation to her. Slim and Gracie set up a house and take on new identities. Everything is going well for them until Mitch tracks them down and attacks. A car chase follows, but Slim is prepared for this and has a hidden stash of needed supplies and money. Slim sends Gracie on vacation with Ginny and her kids, and begins training to meet Mitch head on. Slim trains thoroughly and ambushes Mitch in his own house. A physical fight ensues between the two and Slim ends up killing him but gets off on self defense.
