Gleaming the Cube is about a young man named Brian Kelly. Brian has decided that most things that are important to others simply do not matter much to him. He has very little interest in school and rarely even bothers to do his homework. Brian's first passion is skateboarding. It is the one thing in the world that Brian is really good at, and it makes him extremely happy. His entire social circle and life is built around skateboarding. Brian is often criticized by his parents and some of his classmates for having no ambition, but Brian has big dreams of being a professional skateboarder. However, certain tragic events change Brian's outlook on life and force him to take more of an interest in things. Brian finds out his adopted brother has been killed. The police have determined that the brother committed suicide, but Brian does not believe the theory. He knew his brother too well and knew that he would not take his own life. Brian decides that this is the time to get serious and perform his own investigation into his brother's death. Brian soon learns that his brother had found out about some errors on invoices at his place of work. The brother had planned on reporting the discrepancies but died before he could do so. This raises Brian's suspicions even further, and he eventually finds a detective to help him crack the case and find justice for his deceased brother. Gleaming the Cube revolves around the idea that you can hold on to something you are passionate about while still maintaining a responsible life. At first, Brian is reluctant to participate in anything that does not involve skateboarding. However, the death of his brother wakes him up and allows him to focus on finding out the truth. This investigation shows that Brian is capable of performing responsible tasks when necessary.
