Grumpy Old Men is a comedic drama released in 1993 that features Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau in the primary roles of John Gustafson and Max Goldman. These men are neighbors, and they have fought with each other for their entire lives. While there is a sense of friendship the goes along with the feuding, they are constantly bickering and looking for ways to make each other's lives more difficult. They live in Minnesota, where the weather is cold and the men are used to suppressing their feelings. Both of them are widowers, so their solitude amplifies their sense of irritation with each other. Walter's son Jacob, played by Kevin Pollak, is romantically interested in John's daughter Melanie, played by Daryll Hannah. Neither of the dads is too thrilled about this possibility; after a lifetime of being feuding neighbors, they really don't want to be family as well. However, while their children's affairs may cause them some stress, the greater cause of strife between the two of them is the arrival of Ariel, played by Ann-Margret. When she moves into the neighborhood, both of them find themselves swooning, and they ramp up the rivalry as each tries to win her.
