Ironweed is a 1987 drama based on the Pulitzer novel by William Kennedy. Jack Nicholson and Meryl Streep star in the leading roles. Hector Babenco directed the movie. The singer Tom Waits also appears in a supporting role. Nicholson was nominated for Best Actor and Streep for Best Actors at The Academy Awards. The story centers around the relationship of a homeless couple named Francis (Nicholson) and Helen (Streep). Francis is an alcoholic and Helen is ill with a terminal disease. Francis is the real focus of the story. Francis can’t deal with the fact that he dropped and killed their son one night when he was drinking. He deserts the family and hits the road He returns almost thirty years later to reconnect with Helen.
