This Boy's Life (1993) is based on the memoirs of writer Tobias Wolff, during his childhood years. The story chronicles the adventures of Toby (Leonardo DiCaprio) and his beloved mother, Caroline (Ellen Barkin), and their free-spirited nomadic lifestyle as Caroline moves from one boyfriend to the next following her divorce from Toby's father. As a young teenager, Toby is given the space to basically do whatever he wants, which lands him in hot water on a regular basis. Caroline comes to realize that her son is growing up and out of control, but she feels helpless to do anything about it. Enter Dwight Hansen (Robert De Niro), an initially charming man from a small town called Concrete with three children of his own. Dwight wins over and eventually marries Caroline. She and Toby move to Concrete with Dwight to yet again start a new life, but Dwight is determined to break the spirit of Caroline and to make Toby into a respectable man by any means possible, including physical and verbal abuse. Dwight may be the king of his castle, but Toby is determined to escape his stepfather and the town of Concrete forever and not look back.
