The movie known as Lawless was a gangster film that came out in 2012. This movie was directed by John Hillcoat and written by Nick Cave. It was also based on a historical novel called The Wettest County in the World. This movie covers the brothers Jack, Forrest, and Howard Bondurant who were selling moonshine in Franklin County Virginia during the Prohibition Era. It was released in theaters on August 29, 2012. Lawless is among the more modern mob movies. This movie takes place in the year 1931 where the Bondurant brothers are running a moonshine business that is very successful. They are the leading sellers in Franklin County Virginia. With the help of their friend, Cricket Pate they are able to use a bar to cover up their illegal business. The brothers hire a dancer named Maggie Beauford to be a waitress. One day a deputy named Charles Rakes confronts the brothers and requests for a cut of the profits. They refuse the request and threaten to kill him if he ever returns. One of the brothers named Forrest meets with all of the other bootleggers and tells them to refuse to give any payments to Rakes. However the other bootleggers give in and provide Rakes with some of their profits. Forrest beats up a few men after they harass Maggie. However the men return and murder Forrest along with raping Maggie. After these events the brothers decide to get revenge. Forrest and his men get into a firefight and win the shootout. In the end the four brothers get married and settle down in 1940. Lawless got a rather positive critical response. In fact the site known as Rotten Tomatoes gave the movie a rating of 65% fresh. On a ten point scale, it got a 6.4 out of ten making it an above average movie. On Metacritic it got a score of 58% out of 100 reviews. The movie was known to be grim, bloody along with having some considerable flaws. It was also known to be a movie that didn’t quite live up to the epic status it was striving for. However it still had good pacing and also well acted so it got good points there. . For those who enjoy mobster/gangster movies this will likely be among the more anticipated movies of the year. This movie had some good content and was up there with other notable gangster films. It wasn’t quite as good as some of the very best but it is definitely the finest mob movie in recent years. Overall this was a decent movie that had a good story along with solid pacing.
