Landy and Bea Bretthorst live a tranquil life in their small Missouri town in the 1950s, but that is all about to change. Landy's sister Grace, who has been living in the local insane asylum, is released and comes to live with them. Though they want to welcome and nurture her, it soon becomes obvious that she still has a lot of problems. The couple's life is thrown into turmoil as they struggle to keep Grace from wreaking mayhem upon herself and others. They begin to question whether it will be possible for the three of them to live harmoniously.
