Swing Shift is set in World War II, during the time of so called "Rosie the Riveter." Kay Walsh (Goldie Hawn) is a wife of the 1950s who thought her life would be about being a homemaker. She has to take a job in an armaments factory during the war while her husband ships off to the front lines. The emotional atmosphere caused by war and the additional burdens it has placed on Kay pressure her into seeking comfort from one of the few men still around, a charming musician named Lucky (Kurt Russell) who has been declared unfit for service. The two of them also befriend a woman named Hazel (Christine Lahti) who happens to be a former singer. Amidst the wartime atmosphere of fear and despair, the three find emotional refuge together and try to let the good times roll. They try to grab a little gusto while they can. Things get complicated when Kay's husband comes home somewhat unexpectedly on furlough.
