The Big Year
The Big Year is a comedy that stars Steve Martin, Jack Black and Owen Wilson. The plot revolves around a competition for amateur bird watchers (birders), which involves sighting and cataloging as many different species of bird as possible during one calendar year. This is known as doing a Big Year. Stu Preissler (Steve Martin), is a busy corporate executive with a passion for birding, who attempts to take a leave of absence from the high-powered decision making of his job to go on a bird quest. He has plans to retire in the near future, but his colleagues at the firm are pressuring him to stay on. One work related crisis after another disrupts his effort to do a Big Year. Brad Harris, played by Jack Black, is a computer programmer who is still getting over a recent divorce. He can’t really afford the travel expense of doing a Big Year, but has made it a priority despite the objections of his father (Brian Dennehy), who feels his son's preoccupation with birding is foolishness. Owen Wilson plays Kenny Bostick, a roofing contractor and the current record holder for sighting 732 species while doing a Big Year. He is cocky and aggressive, but begins to feel that his record might be in jeopardy of being broken, so he takes time off and embarks once again on a bird hunt. Conflict arises when his young wife (Rosamund Pike) who is in a hurry to start a family, urges him to come home. During the course of the competition, Preissler and Harris cross paths, become friendly and eventually after some mutual distrust, join forces against the dirty tricks tactics of Bostick.
