Based on the novel of the same name, The Cincinnati Kid tells the story of two poker players, largely from the perspective of the younger player, Steve McQueen's The Kid. Lancey Howard, played by Edward G. Robinson is thought to be the best poker player in the world. The Kid is an up and coming player who believes he has the skills to beat Howard and stake his claim as the best player around.

Bribery and corruption surround the game, none of which is done with the knowledge of either Howard or The Kid, who begin the game in the company of four players. After being beaten badly in a previous game by Howard, Slade attempts to fix the odds in favor of The Kid in a bid to humiliate Howard causing the dealer, Shooter to be placed in the center of a moral dilemma. The movie builds to a climatic hand that will decide the fate of The Kid and Howard with the stakes higher than ever before.
