In this period war film based on the novel by Richard McKenna, Jake Holman (Steve McQueen) is a Machinist's Mate serving on the gunboat U.S.S. San Pablo along the Yangtze River in the 1926. The ships are run by the labor of local Chinese manual labor who do all the true work, while the American crew are mostly idle except for command. Holman rocks the boat when he gets directly involved in the ship maintenance, causing resentment with the rest of the crew who are worried his interference will lead to more work for them and the Chinese laborers who see a risk to their livelihoods.

Things are further complicated as Holman and his personal code of ethics continues to interfere with the established systems of colonialism and exploitation. It all comes to a head when their ship ends up in the middle of a potential diplomatic incident.

Also featuring Richard Attenborough, Richard Crenna, Candice Bergen, and Mako. Directed by Robert Wise.
