The Rapture, directed by Michael Tolkin and filmed in 1991, stars Mimi Rodgers and David Duchovny. Mimi Rodgers plays the part of Sharon, a women bored with life and looking for excitement. She works as a telephone operator, a job, she finds boring and does not really like, but at night she leads a wilder life trying to build excitement for herself. David Duchovny plays Sharon's boyfriend (and Latter Husband), who she meets during her evenings out at the night clubs. Sharon discovers Christianity from a religious sect canvassing door to door. They tell her about the coming rapture and in time she accepts this belief and becomes a born again Christian. She also leads her husband to Christianity. After their daughter Mary is born her husband Randy is murdered. Sharon begins to question her faith in God, but becomes convinced that her and Mary must go and wait in the desert for the end (the Rapture) to come. A policeman named Foster becomes concerned for Sharon and Mary, but Sharon continues to believe that the end is near. Both mother and daughter become impatient waiting and decide to take matters into their own hands. Sharon shoots and kills Mary, but then is unable to kill herself. She confesses what she has done to foster and is arrested and placed in jail. While in jail Mary appears to Sharon, accompanied by two angels, and tries to convince Sharon to let go of the anger she holds toward God over the murder of her husband. After the visit the rapture begins with the sound of a trumpet herd around the world. Sharon and Foster drive out into the desert and are rapture into a place of punishment. Foster, who has been an atheist all his life, comes to accept God and is admitted into heaven. Sharon is still angry at God over her husband being murdered. Mary again encourages Sharon to let go of her anger so she can join her family in heaven, but Sharon refuses and makes the choice to remain in the place of punishment forever.
