In 1984, Ray Quick (Sylvester Stallone) and Ned Trent (James Woods) are CIA explosives experts working an assignment together. Quick tries to call off the hit when he sees a child that will be taken out in the explosion, but Trent refuses. Thus, Quick vows to end Trent’s career with the CIA. In present day, ten years later, Quick has left the CIA and is a freelance explosives expert for hire. Trent has lost his job with the CIA, and is now head of security for a crime boss named Joe Leon (Rod Steiger), and Trent is still hell-bent on revenge. Quick is hired by May Munro (Sharon Stone) to kill the three men, including Joe Leon’s son Tomas (Eric Roberts), who murdered her parents. But, May was actually hired by Trent in an effort to lure Quick out of hiding so that he can kill him. While May is agreeable to the arrangement, she has an agenda of her own. She wants to watch Tomas die, and makes efforts to garner his attention and spend enough time with him to be present when he is murdered. When Quick sets up the explosion for Tomas, May reveals her true identity just before the bomb goes off, then quickly exits and heads to the hospital where she drops her wallet in a dying junkie’s purse where she is then presumed dead. Quick and May see each other at the funeral of the junkie, and take off together just before Trent arrives to prove that May faked her death. Joe Leon calls in a favor to the Chief of Police to get Trent on the case of his son’s murder. Trent is desperate to find and kill Quick once and for all. But Quick and May, after discovering that Joe Leon is the one who ordered the hit on her parents still have one more debt to settle.
