This time, he's sent back to 2015 to meet Dr. Cassandra Railly, a brilliant but skeptical virologist who may hold the key to stopping the outbreak.
As Cole navigates this new world, he's as surprised as Dr. Railly by the things he finds. For her part, Railly is convinced that Cole is a mentally ill patient who's escaped from a nearby psychiatric facility. She calls the authorities, and Cole is quickly apprehended.
Locked up in the hospital, Cole is drugged and interrogated, but refuses to give up any information about his mission to stop the virus. Meanwhile, Railly begins to question her own judgment. Could Cole really be a time traveler from the future? As she wrestles with these thoughts, she begins to experience strange and unsettling visions.
Eventually, Cole manages to escape from the hospital and makes his way back to Railly's lab. There, he hopes to convince her of the truth and get her help in stopping the outbreak. But Railly is still not entirely convinced. She urges Cole to seek psychiatric help, and even offers to take him there herself.
Despite her skepticism, Railly begins to sense that Cole may be telling the truth. As the episode progresses, she becomes increasingly drawn into his mission, while at the same time becoming ever more uncomfortable with the dangerous and unpredictable world he inhabits.
With "Mentally Divergent," 12 Monkeys sets the stage for a thrilling and complex series that explores issues of time travel, mental illness, and the nature of reality itself.
