Jack Griffin (Glenn Howerton), a disgraced Harvard philosophy scholar, continues to work as an Advanced Placement Biology teacher at Whitlock High School in Toledo, Ohio. He uses his position to try and get back at his academic rivals, but his plans are often foiled by his students and the school's principal, Ralph Durbin (Patton Oswalt).

In season 1 episode 10, titled "Durbin Crashes," Griffin finds himself in a power struggle with Durbin. When the football team's bus breaks down, Griffin takes it upon himself to drive the team to their game, using it as an opportunity to showcase his leadership qualities and win over Principal Durbin's support.
