A.P. Bio season 3 episode 3 titled "Gary Meets Dave" follows disgraced Harvard philosophy scholar Jack Griffin (Glenn Howerton) in his forced tenure as a high school biology teacher at Whitlock High. In this episode, Jack finds out that the school has hired a new music teacher, Dave (Tommy Dewey), and he's already learned that Dave is the jerk who stole his ex-girlfriend years ago.
Despite Jack's misgivings about him, everyone else at the school seems to love Dave, including Jack's best friend and fellow teacher Mary (Mary Sohn) and the principal Ralph (Paula Pell). Jack finds himself increasingly irritated by Dave, who seems to be really making an effort to connect with the students and faculty alike.
Adding to Jack's stress levels is his own struggling personal life. Jack is living with his ex-girlfriend's mother Lynette (Jean Villepique), and he's trying to get over his heartbreak and make sense of his complicated feelings for Lynette. As Jack navigates these complex and uncomfortable personal relationships, he finds himself taking out his frustrations on Dave in increasingly aggressive ways.
Throughout "Gary Meets Dave," we see Jack resorting to his usual tactics of manipulating and deceiving those around him to get what he wants. He sets up an elaborate prank on Dave, hoping to show everyone how terrible he is, but things quickly spiral out of control. As Jack scrambles to salvage the situation and avoid getting fired, he learns a valuable lesson about forgiveness and moving on.
One of the standout moments of the episode comes when Jack decides to give Dave a chance and attend his evening music performance at the local bar. Despite his initial reluctance, Jack finds himself genuinely enjoying Dave's music and even getting up on stage to perform with him. The scene is a perfect example of the show's ability to juxtapose the absurd with the heartfelt, with Jack's hilarious rendition of a Dave Matthews Band song providing a surprisingly touching moment of connection between the two characters.
Overall, "Gary Meets Dave" is a strong entry in A.P. Bio's third season, offering plenty of laughs alongside some genuine character development. While the episode is largely focused on Jack's personal issues, it also manages to touch on some of the broader themes of the series, including the importance of community and the power of forgiveness. Fans of the show will find plenty to enjoy here, and newcomers may well find themselves hooked by the end of this hilarious and heartfelt episode.
