After Lately is an American mockumentary television series that aired on E! Entertainment Television. The show is a behind-the-scenes look at the popular late-night talk show, Chelsea Lately, and the similarly named book club show, Chelsea lately. The series follows the lives of the staff members as they interact with one another, deal with their personal issues, and attempt to keep up with Chelsea Handler's various demands.
The first episode of season 3, titled "Network Research," focuses on the staff of Chelsea Lately as they prepare to pitch new show ideas to the executives at the E! network. The episode opens with Brad Wollack, a writer and producer for the show, attempting to come up with a new sketch idea. After conferring with several other staff members, including Chelsea herself, Brad decides to pitch a sketch that features comedians reading Yahoo! Answers posts in a humorous way.
As the staff continues to work on their pitches, we see Chelsea reading through some of the ideas that have already been submitted. She is not impressed by most of them and criticizes the writers for not being creative enough. Meanwhile, Jiffy, another writer on the show, is tasked with creating a website that will showcase all of their best clips and sketches from over the years.
Later on in the episode, the staff meets with the executives from E! to pitch their ideas. As they go around the room, each staff member presents their idea, which is then critiqued and questioned by the executives. Some of the pitches are successful, while others fall flat. Jiffy's idea is particularly well-received by the network, and it looks like the new website will become a reality.
Throughout the episode, we see the staff members interacting in their usual way, with plenty of banter and joking around. Chelsea herself is shown in some candid moments, including one where she admits to being nervous about the pitches. We also get a glimpse into the personal lives of some of the staff members, including Sarah Colonna and Heather McDonald, who both discuss their dating woes.
Overall, "Network Research" is a fun and entertaining episode of After Lately that offers a glimpse into the inner workings of a television show. The tension and excitement of pitching new show ideas to network executives is palpable, and the episode does a great job of highlighting the challenges and rewards of the creative process.
