In the ninth episode of American Housewife's first season, Katie plays the role of Krampus, a mythical creature from European folklore, in a town tradition that takes place during Christmastime. While initially excited about her new role, Katie begins to feel the weight of the responsibilities thrust upon her, including the difficult task of scaring the children in the community who have been misbehaving throughout the year.
As Katie struggles to balance her duties as Krampus with her everyday life as a busy mother, she begins to feel like she is losing control. Her husband, Greg, attempts to assist her by taking on some of her responsibilities at home, but Katie is still unable to shake the feeling that she is failing at both her roles as a mother and as Krampus.
Meanwhile, the Otto family son, Oliver, is participating in a charity event at his school in an attempt to raise money for those in need during the holiday season. However, Oliver's efforts are thwarted when his best friend Cooper raises significantly more money than him by accepting donations from a number of wealthy parents in their community. The situation causes Oliver to question the true meaning of Christmas, and he eventually comes to the realization that it's about spreading love and cheer rather than simply giving material gifts.
As the Krampus tradition begins, Katie's fears are realized when she is unable to scare the children as intended. Instead, she ends up making them cry, which causes her to question her suitability for the role. In the end, however, she learns an important lesson about the value of self-confidence and owning one's imperfections.
Throughout the episode, viewers are treated to a lighthearted and humorous take on the challenges of motherhood, as well as an exploration of larger themes such as the true meaning of Christmas and the dangers of materialism. The episode features strong performances from the cast, particularly Katy Mixon as Katie, who manages to infuse her portrayal of the character with both humor and heart. In addition, the episode features a number of clever nods to the Krampus tradition and its origins, making it a must-watch for fans of both American Housewife and Christmastime traditions.
