Ashes to Ashes is a British police procedural drama that first aired in 2008. The series is a spin-off of the popular show Life on Mars which aired from 2006 to 2007. Both shows are set in the 1970s, however, Ashes to Ashes takes place in 1981.
Episode 1 of Ashes to Ashes opens with Detective Chief Inspector Alex Drake being shot in the head while on duty. The audience sees her slowly slipping away while her daughter, Molly, is crying and screaming for her mother to wake up. As Alex takes her last breath, she is transported back in time to the year 1981.
Alex wakes up to find herself in a strange place - London in 1981. Everything is different, from the fashion to the technology. She quickly realizes that she has been transported back in time and starts looking for a way to get back to her own time. As she tries to figure out what has happened to her, she meets Gene Hunt, a talented detective who is working in the same police department as her. Gene is the leader of a team of investigators who are trying to solve a series of murders that have been occurring in the city.
As she is trying to adjust to her new environment, Alex is constantly reminded of her old life in the present day. She hears voices of her colleagues and friends from the present day and it takes her some time to realize that she is not really talking to them. In one scene, she even imagines that her daughter Molly is with her and it takes her a moment to snap out of it.
Throughout the episode, Alex has to deal with the shock of being transported back in time, as well as the hostility she faces from some of her colleagues who do not trust her because of her modern methods. The 1980s were a time of change in the police force, and some of the older officers are resistant to the new ways of doing things.
The investigation into the murders is the main plotline of the episode, but it takes a backseat to the introduction of the characters. Viewers are introduced to Alex, Gene, and the rest of the team who will be working together to solve the crimes throughout the series. Each of the characters is given a chance to shine in this episode, and it's clear that the series will be exploring their relationships with each other in the future.
Overall, Episode 1 of Ashes to Ashes is an excellent start to the series. The show does an excellent job of introducing the characters and setting up the mystery that will drive the series forward. It's clear that this is not going to be a show that relies solely on the investigation plotlines but will also be exploring the character development of the protagonists. The show's setting in the 1980s is also handled well, with plenty of references to the time period without feeling too over-the-top. Fans of police procedural dramas will enjoy this show's mix of mystery and character development, and the time travel element adds an interesting twist to the formula.
