  • June 27, 2021

The 2021 BET Awards ceremony celebrates Black excellence in music, entertainment, and culture. Hosted by Taraji P. Henson, the event features electrifying performances by some of the biggest names in hip-hop, R&B, and gospel, including Megan Thee Stallion, DaBaby, H.E.R., and Kirk Franklin.

The night kicks off with a powerful opening number by Lil Nas X, who performs his hit single "Montero (Call Me By Your Name)" on a shimmering set that pays tribute to queer iconography. The stage transitions to a soulful performance by H.E.R., who sings "Fight For You" from Judas and the Black Messiah, a film that garnered six nominations at the ceremony.

As the night goes on, fans and viewers are treated to a variety of other stunning musical performances. Black Pumas perform "Colors" in a stripped-down, intimate set, while Tyler, The Creator delivers a lively rendition of "Lumberjack" complete with a giant inflatable butt on stage.

The BET Awards also serve as a platform to honor Black artists, activists, and change makers who have made significant contributions to society. This year's honorees include Queen Latifah, Tyler Perry, and the late DMX, who receives a heartfelt tribute from his Ruff Ryders crew and his son.

Several of the night's winners use their acceptance speeches to shine a light on important issues facing the Black community. Lil Baby delivers a powerful call to action on police brutality, while Cardi B praises the impact of Black music on popular culture.

The 2021 BET Awards showcase the immense talent, diversity, and resilience of Black culture. From the thrilling musical performances to the touching tributes, the night is a celebration of the strength and beauty of the Black community.
