From the same person who produces Deadliest Catch comes this series that focuses on the rough-and-tumble world of the Texas oil fields. Now entering its fifth season, this reality show gets up close and personal with the struggles facing the roughnecks who try to discover the latest hot oil field. Season one focused on three different oil rigs and crews, with each of them facing different challenges and different personnel problems. Each crew had a maximum of 50 days to extract as much oil as possible from the ground they had leased. Season two focused on the number 28 rig owned by Autry Stephens. He still has 50 days to extract oil but the challenge that season was that he was trying to do it using four different rigs and locations. The following seasons have focused on Autry and his crews and the challenges they face, which include hostile landlords and roughnecks who can't seem to keep from getting in trouble with the law. Season five's hook is that one of his employees will also be his roommate, which ensures that problems on the rig will continue when they each get home. One of the factors that makes the show so much fun to watch is that the history of the Texas oil fields makes for great television. All of the easy wells have been dug and the land that is left has been drilled before or has some other geographical problem that makes it difficult to retrieve the oil from the ground. While larger oil companies rely on sophisticated technology and extensive mapping to find the best place to drill, these small wildcat oil companies still rely on the old school instinct and brawn to make money. One of the challenges for Black Gold is that in the U.S. it airs on TruTV, a network which is primarly known for more brash shows such as Hardcore Pawn. This series is a change-up for TruTV, and some viewers have missed the series because they don't often watch the channel.
