Black-ish Season 5 Episode 5 Good Grief

In season 5 episode 5 of Black-ish, titled "Good Grief," the Johnson family deals with the death of a beloved family member. As they try to come to terms with their grief, they each have their own unique way of coping.

Rainbow (Tracee Ellis Ross) is struggling with the fact that her father, who she had a complicated relationship with, is no longer alive. She tries to distract herself by throwing herself into work, but ultimately realizes that she needs to tackle her emotions head-on.

Dre (Anthony Anderson) is equally affected by the loss, but tries to put on a brave face and act like everything's okay for the sake of his family. He also struggles with the realization that he is now the patriarch of the family and worries about living up to his father's legacy.

Junior (Marcus Scribner) tries to connect with his younger siblings by sharing his own experience with grief, but finds that they're not quite ready to open up yet. He also struggles with feeling like he didn't get to know his grandfather as well as he would have liked to.

Zoey (Yara Shahidi) is the only family member who seems to be coping with the loss relatively well. She spends most of the episode trying to convince her family to let her go to a music festival, which leads to a few lighthearted moments amidst the heavier subject matter.

Jack (Miles Brown) and Diane (Marsai Martin) are both struggling to understand the concept of death and what it means for their grandfather. They try to come up with their own explanations and rituals to help them process their feelings.

Throughout the episode, the family comes together to support each other in their grief, and ultimately learns that it's okay to feel a wide range of emotions after a loss. The episode strikes a balance between humor and heartbreak, and ends on a poignant note as the family pays tribute to their beloved patriarch.
