Born to Explore is a show that follows the adventures of explorer and host, Richard Wiese, as he journeys to remote locations around the world and immerses himself in the cultures, wildlife and nature of the region. Season two, episode seven, titled "Land of the Spirit Bear," takes Richard on a thrilling journey to the Great Bear Rainforest in British Columbia, Canada.

The episode begins with Richard arriving in Bella Bella, a small First Nations community, where he meets his guide and local expert, Marven Robinson. Marven explains to Richard that the Great Bear Rainforest is one of the last remaining intact temperate rainforests in the world, and it is home to the rare white spirit bear, a subspecies of the black bear that has a white coat. Richard learns that the First Nations people of this area consider the spirit bear to be a sacred animal and a symbol of their spiritual connection to the land.

Richard and Marven set out on a boat to explore the area and spot wildlife. Their first stop is a small island where they visit a black bear den and watch a mother bear nurse her cubs. The black bear is the most common bear in the area and is known for its excellent fishing abilities. Richard also learns that the black bear is very important to the First Nations people who use the meat and fur for food and clothing.

Their next stop is a visit to a traditional First Nations longhouse where they meet with the hereditary chief of the Wuikinuxv Nation, Willie Moon. Richard learns about the history and culture of the First Nations people and their deep connection to the land and animals.

In the Great Bear Rainforest, Marven and Richard set up a remote camera to capture footage of the elusive spirit bear. They hike through the forest, and the camera captures stunning footage of the spirit bear fishing for salmon in a river. Richard is amazed by the sheer beauty and majesty of the spirit bear and understands why it is considered a sacred animal.

As their journey continues, Richard and Marven come across a humpback whale and her calf swimming in the ocean. Richard is in awe of these magnificent creatures and learns about their unique behaviors, including their epic migrations and their ability to communicate with each other through songs.

On their last day in the Great Bear Rainforest, Richard and Marven take a hike to a beautiful waterfall. Along the way, they encounter the rare Kermode or spirit bear once again. Richard watches in awe as the bear walks towards them and then returns to fishing for salmon in the river. The encounter is a testament to the importance of this remote wilderness and the need to protect it.

Throughout the episode, Richard reflects on the significance of the Great Bear Rainforest and its importance to the First Nations people, wildlife, and the world. He learns about the delicacy of the ecosystem and the need to preserve it for future generations. The episode ends with Richard expressing his gratitude for the opportunity to experience the beauty and wonder of the Great Bear Rainforest and the spirit bear.
