Buddy Complex is a 2014 anime that chronicles the partnership between two giant robot pilots, Aoba and Dio, after the former is taken into a wormhole that transports him into the year 2088 by another pilot named Hina. While it starts out in present day Japan, Buddy complex takes place in the future when two groups known as the Free Pact Alliance and the Zogilia republic are at war with each other at a Global scale.

The show takes on stronger science fiction elements than most animes by introducing the protagonists to coupling, where the two pilots Aoba and Dio merge their thoughts together despite piloting separate robots in order to acquire each others' skills in combat.

The unique drama of Buddy Complex relies on why Aoba is able to perform the coupling well with Dio despite having no prior knowledge of him or any robot training to begin with. It also reveals who Hina really is and why she sent Aoba to the future in an unexpected twist of fate between her and the Zogilia republic.

Buddy Complex is a series that is currently running and has 1 seasons (15 episodes). The series first aired on January 6, 2014.

  • Hina comes aboard the Cygnus with Aoba and Dio, and she must decide where her allegiances lie. Meanwhile, her former comrades return home to Zogilia to find a shocking turn of events.

  • With over half their fleet gone and up against enemy Coupling Valiancers, the Cygnus is tasked with taking down the Gorgon, Zogilia's weapon of mass destruction.

  • The crew of the Cygnus work through the fallout of losing the Luxon and the Bradyon, and of the flawed Coupling that Aoba and Dio conducted using the old Coupling Valiancers.

  • The Zogilians infiltrate the Hawaii Base. While the crew of the Cygnus work to thwart them, Hina's father reveals a startling truth to her.

  • Aoba, Dio, and Mayuka get to go on shore leave in Hawaii. And in the meantime, the Zogilian contingent plan their next operation to get their hands on the Confederation's Coupling Valiancers.

  • Discouraged by his encounter with Hina, Aoba mopes around, but Dio finds his sniveling, defeatist attitude unacceptable, especially once they come under attack yet again.

  • Aoba finally gets some time to talk to Hina, but as they try to survive the night on the island they crash-landed on, he has a frustrating time trying to get through to her.

  • As the Cygnus makes its way to the Hawaii Base, Zogilia's Protection Division catches up with them. And the three Coupler pilots must decide who will pair up with whom.

  • After being mobilized, the Cygnus and the Coupling Valiancers are no longer a secret. In order to defend their existence against outraged politicians, a film crew arrives to make a promotional video to rally popular support.
