Clean House Season 4 Episode 5 The Lyons Family
- March 14, 2007
The episode titled "The Lyons Family" is the fifth installment of the fourth season of Clean House. It features an episode where Niecy Nash and her team of experts visit a house with five adult family members who share the same crowded and messy living quarters. The Lyons family lives in a large house with a lot of clutter, with items such as clothes, equipment, and toys filling the hallways and crevices.
The family explains their situation to Niecy, stating that they have been merely clinging to things over time, not wanting to let go of anything. With everyone accumulating things, they've run out of space, and their home has become unmanageable. The parents, John and Gail, have been married for 32 years and have two adult children, Josie and John Jr, as well as John Jr's wife, Aimee, living with them together.
There is a lot of tension in this episode, especially between John Jr. and Josie, who cannot seem to get along. John Jr. works full-time and also runs a side business, leaving his wife at home to take care of their two young children. Meanwhile, Josie is a part-time hairstylist struggling to find a permanent job and feels like she has been stuck at home for years, which has caused resentment towards her family.
Moreover, the house is in dire shape, with Josie's old bedroom serving as a storage room, Gail and John's room is cluttered and cramped, while John Jr. and Aimee's room is small and cramped, making it difficult for them to relax. Even the kitchen is congested, with dirty dishes and groceries cluttering the countertops and tables.
With the help of Niecy and her team of designers, a deliberate attempt is made to declutter and organize the home. The first step is clearing out the items that everyone doesn't need and going through a grueling process of donating, selling, and dumping everything that is no longer in use.
Next, Niecy brings in a team of cleaners to help the family start making their home cleaner. They offered to assist the family in deep cleaning the kitchen, bathrooms, and the rest of the house, including vacuuming carpets and reorganizing parts of the home. After completing the cleaning, the designers begin the process of designing and renovating the home. The professionals aim to transform the living space to make it more spacious and welcoming.
As the episode progresses, Niecy and the design team uncover deeper emotional issues, realizing that the problems in the house are not just physical, but mental, and emotional as well. They suggest therapy for the family to understand and solve their issues from the root, enabling them to work together as a unit to keep the house orderly.
This episode is about relieving the family of the physical clutter in their home, but also to rebalance the emotional aspects of their family dynamic. As always, the messy journey is heartfelt and emotional, but in the end, the family is delighted with their new space and is grateful for the change it has brought in their lives.
