Cape Disappointment, the largest search and rescue station in the Northwest, sits at the mouth of the Columbia River. This area is regarded as one of the most difficult river bars to navigate in the world. With a combination of strong outgoing tides and large incoming swells, surf conditions can exist in and around the bar entrance producing waves that reach 30 feet in height. In order to combat these conditions, the unit has five search and rescue boats all designed for operations in heavy surf; each boat is capable of re-Ârighting itself after rolling over in breaking swells.

Air Station Astoria faces steep terrain as they rescue two injured teens from the mountains, and battle high seas to rescue a boat crewman who has fallen. Station Cape Disappointment employs a new method to rescue men stranded on an island.

The Coast Guard stops at nothing to rescue their own when a cutter attempts to cross the bar in rough weather. Air Station Astoria rescues a gravely injured ice climber in the mountains and takes on a risk to rescue a young man teetering on the edge of a cliff.

Station Cape D arms up after receiving reports of illegal activity on a fishing vessel. In Astoria, aircrews race into action to search for hikers lost in the snowy mountains, and to rescue a severely injured surfer.

Air Station Astoria rescues a mariner forced to abandon ship due to harsh weather conditions, while a shore side fire near Station Cape Disappointment threatens to spread toxic fumes.

All assets are on high alert as they provide assistance to a boat taking on water in rough seas; rescue a girl precariously stuck on a cliff and tirelessly search for a male gone missing in the ocean.

Four individuals cling to life as Sector Columbia River launches to perform the rescues - a fisherman knocked unconscious, a paddle boarder gone missing in the Columbia River, a traveler with unclear symptoms and a female clinging to a dangerous cliff.

2. A Delicate Operation

For Station Cape Disappointment, time is of the essence as two mariners are forced to abandon ship and a vessel threatens to capsize. Meanwhile, aircrews from Astoria operate a dangerous hoist for a severely injured logger and stand guard as a vessel with 120 crewmen battles a fire.

Air Station Astoria and Station Cape D join forces to effect back-to-back rescues of four mariners who have abandoned ship in the frigid waters, two severely burned boat crewmen and a vessel on the brink of capsizing.
