In the ninth episode of Cutthroat Kitchen's first season, titled "Kiss My Grits," four professional chefs compete against each other in a series of culinary challenges with a twist. Hosted by Alton Brown, the show begins with each chef receiving $25,000 to spend on sabotaging their opponents throughout the competition. Through three rounds of cooking, the chefs bid against each other to earn advantages such as the ability to steal each other's ingredients or force a competitor to cook using only a camping stove.
The first round starts with the chefs being tasked with making shrimp and grits, a classic southern dish. However, Brown has a twist for them: they must make the dish using a waffle iron. Each chef can either roll the dice and attempt to make their dish using the unconventional tool or spend their money to buy a traditional stove. One of the chefs, a self-proclaimed grits expert, decides to roll the dice and ends up burning her dish in the iron. Another chef, who opts for the traditional stove, finds herself sabotaged by a competitor who steals her shrimp.
The second round has the chefs creating a seafood boil, but with a Catch-22: they can only use one pot and must cook all their ingredients at once. To complicate matters, Brown offers a $6,000 advantage to the chef who chooses to give up one of their utensils, making cooking even more challenging. One chef decides to use a steamer basket to cook her seafood, while another decides to sacrifice his stirring spoon to earn the advantage. The sabotages in this round are particularly harsh, with one chef being forced to wear a giant foam hand that prevents her from using one of her arms while cooking. Another chef is made to use a toy shovel as his only utensil.
Finally, the last round has the remaining two chefs creating a dessert using fruit cobbler as the base. However, the chefs must bid on ingredients in a blind auction, with no idea which fruits they will receive. Brown throws in an additional twist by offering a $5,000 advantage to the chef who can cook using only a camp stove. One chef chooses to bid on cherries while the other chooses to bid on peaches. However, both chefs are sabotaged in this round, with one being forced to wear horse blinders that block her vision while cooking, and the other having to cook while standing on one leg.
At the end of the three rounds, only one chef is left standing, having successfully navigated the sabotage-filled challenges while still creating delicious dishes. The winner takes home the remaining money from their initial $25,000 and the well-deserved title of Cutthroat Kitchen champion.
Overall, "Kiss My Grits" is a thrilling episode of Cutthroat Kitchen that showcases the creativity and skill of the contestants while also highlighting the show's unique twist on cooking competitions. With its unpredictable sabotages and high-stakes bidding, this episode is sure to keep audiences on the edge of their seats from start to finish.
