In the tenth episode of season 3 of Cutthroat Kitchen, entitled "Hakuna Frittata," four chefs take on challenges to prepare an international breakfast dish while navigating the various sabotages thrown their way by host Alton Brown.
The competition kicks off with an auction for ingredients and cooking tools, and the chefs must work within a budget to secure the items they need to prepare their dishes. The first challenge requires the chefs to create their take on eggs Benedict, but they must do so while wearing a giant egg costume that limits their mobility in the kitchen. One chef is forced to use bacon instead of Canadian bacon, while another is stuck using a toaster oven to make their English muffins.
Next up, the chefs must create a Mexican-inspired breakfast dish, with one chef being forced to use a food processor as their sole cooking tool. Another chef is tasked with making a chile relleno, but they are only given a single pan to work with, while a third chef must make huevos rancheros with a tortilla press instead of a frying pan.
For the final challenge, the chefs must put their own spin on a classic French dish: the frittata. However, they must do so while navigating a particularly diabolical sabotage - Alton has littered the kitchen with hidden golf balls, and the chefs must avoid hitting one while carrying their dishes to the judges' table. One chef is required to use a coffee pot as their primary cooking tool, while another is tasked with using saltine crackers instead of actual breadcrumbs.
Throughout the episode, Alton plays up the competitive element, goading the chefs into bidding on particularly nasty sabotages and stirring up tension in the kitchen. The judges - chef Antonia Lofaso, food editor Simon Majumdar, and comedian Hal Sparks - provide their honest assessments of each dish, praising creative use of ingredients and faulting those who failed to meet the challenge's requirements.
In the end, one chef emerges victorious, having overcome the sabotages and impressed the judges with their innovative take on the frittata. "Hakuna Frittata" is a tense and entertaining episode, showcasing the creativity and ingenuity of the chefs as they battle their way through a series of daunting challenges.
