As the opening scene of Dances with the Dragons begins, viewers are introduced to the two main characters, Gayus and Gigina, who are mages in the world of Jushiki. They use Jushiki, which is Japanese for "procedure formula," to wield magic and power, but there are limitations as to how much they can use it. The show is set in a world where there are two factions, the North and the South. Gayus and Gigina work as mercenaries for the South faction.
In episode 1, "Calamitous Song of Jushiki and Swords," Gayus and Gigina are hired by the South faction to eliminate a group of bandits who are robbing granaries and disrupting supply chains. Their mission takes them to an underground lair, where they encounter the bandit leader and his minions.
The action-packed scenes in the underground lair are well choreographed and keep the viewer engaged. The fight scenes are intense and visually pleasing. They use their Jushiki magic to counter the bandits' sword skills and eliminate them one by one. It's clear from the get-go that Gayus and Gigina have a good chemistry between them. Gigina is all about fighting, whereas Gayus is more cautious and prefers to do things by the book.
Before they can eliminate the leader, a high-ranking official named Bishop arrives and takes over the situation. He orders the mages to stop their operations and ensure that the bandits aren't killed. It's clear that there's some tension between Bishop and Gayus, but the reason for it is not yet revealed.
The two mages are ordered to take the bandits to the North, where they will be put on trial. Bishop accompanies them, along with his aide, who seems to have a personal connection with Gayus.
On their journey north, the episode takes a more relaxed pace, giving viewers a chance to know more about the characters and their motivations. The conversations between Gayus and Gigina are entertaining, and the dialogue is snappy and witty.
The journey isn't without its dangers, however, as they are attacked by a group of mercenaries working for the North faction. The action scenes in this episode are well executed, and the animation is impressive.
Despite being outnumbered, Gayus and Gigina hold their own and are able to defeat the mercenaries. However, Bishop is grievously injured in the battle, and the group needs to take a break to allow him to recover.
In the meantime, Gayus and Gigina are introduced to a new character, a young girl named Mian. She's a self-proclaimed thief who has been lurking around their campsite. She adds a new dynamic to the group and provides some comic relief throughout the episode.
The final scene of the episode is a cliffhanger, leaving viewers wanting more. Gayus and Gigina are accosted by a mysterious figure who seems to know them both. The episode ends with the promise of more action and excitement to come.
Overall, Dances with the Dragons' first episode is an excellent introduction to the series. The animation is impressive, the action scenes are well done, and the character interactions are entertaining. The show has set up an intriguing world and interesting characters that viewers will want to know more about. Episode 1 is an excellent starting point for anyone looking for a new fantasy anime to watch.
