Set in 1920s England, "Decline and Fall" follows the misadventures of Paul Pennyfeather (Jack Whitehall), a naive and clueless Oxford student who is expelled for indecent behavior. With no future prospects, Paul is forced to take a job teaching at a third-rate boarding school in Wales, where he encounters a colorful cast of characters who range from eccentric to downright dangerous.

At the heart of the series is Paul's relationship with the school's headmaster, Dr. Fagan (Douglas Hodge), a manipulative and crooked academic who is desperate to maintain his position of authority at all costs. Fagan takes an instant dislike to Paul and does everything in his power to make his life miserable, including framing him for a crime he did not commit.

As Paul struggles to navigate the insane world of the boarding school, he finds an unexpected ally in the form of the wealthy and enigmatic Margot Beste-Chetwynde (Eva Longoria), who takes a romantic interest in him despite his many flaws. However, Margot has a dark secret of her own, and her involvement with Paul only leads to more trouble for him.

Along the way, Paul also crosses paths with a number of other colorful characters, including an unstable priest with a drinking problem (played brilliantly by Stephen Graham), a group of rebellious schoolboys with a penchant for arson, and a snobby socialite who believes herself to be above the law.

Despite the many challenges he faces, however, Paul never loses his sense of humor or his determination to do what is right. As he discovers more about the corruption and deceit that underpins the world of academia, he becomes determined to expose the truth and clear his name once and for all.
