The Doctor and his companions continue their journey on board the sailing ship, the 'Undertaker', as they hunt down the energy-based being known as the Black Guardian. The TARDIS team soon discovers that the ship they are travelling on is actually a part of a deadly cosmic challenge which aims to test the worthiness of its participants.
As the Doctor and his companions learn more about the challenge, they encounter other ships, all of which are competing in the challenge. They soon realize that their opponents are not only human but also include highly advanced alien technology, including spaceships of all shapes and sizes.
