  • June 19, 2012

In season 3 episode 5 of Eat St., host James Cunningham takes viewers on a journey to explore some of the most mouth-watering and innovative deli foods around. In this episode, appropriately named "Deli-Icious Delights," viewers get to see how different food trucks across North America put their unique twists on classic deli fare, resulting in some truly exceptional dishes.

First up is the "Cheese Louise" food truck in Seattle, Washington. Here, James meets the owner, Louise, who gives him a behind-the-scenes look at how she creates her signature dish, the "Underground" sandwich. This sandwich features a combination of slow-cooked beef, caramelized onions, and blue cheese crumbles all tucked inside a ciabatta roll and then toasted to perfection. James also tries the "Rogue," a sandwich made with pulled pork, pickled jalapeños, and cheddar cheese, and the "T-Man," a vegetarian option with roasted red peppers, pesto, and fresh mozzarella. James is impressed by how Louise has put her own spin on classic deli sandwiches, and the incredible flavor combinations she has come up with.

Next, James travels to Austin, Texas to visit the "Mmmpanadas" food truck. The owner, Victoria, tells James about her unique approach to making empanadas. She uses a pie crust instead of the traditional empanada dough and fills it with a variety of delicious ingredients, including chicken pot pie, bacon mac 'n' cheese, and buffalo chicken. James samples the "Capitol" empanada, a vegetarian option filled with black beans, corn, and cheddar cheese, and the "Chicken Fajita" empanada, which features grilled chicken, sautéed onions, and peppers. James is blown away by how Victoria has taken a traditional Latin American dish and turned it into something completely her own.

The third stop on James' deli-themed tour is in Denver, Colorado at the "Quiero Arepas" food truck. The owner, Igor, tells James about his love for the Venezuelan arepa, a cornmeal patty that is filled with various meats, vegetables, and cheeses. Igor has put his own spin on the arepa, stuffing it with a variety of unique ingredients like plantains, pulled pork, and black beans. James tries the "Pabellon" arepa, which is filled with shredded beef, black beans, cheese, and plantains. He also tries the "Reina Pepiada" arepa, which is filled with chicken salad made with avocado and lime. James is impressed by how Igor has taken a traditional dish and made it accessible to a wider audience by adding ingredients that are familiar to Americans.

The final stop on James' deli-themed tour is in Portland, Oregon at the "Best Friend" food truck. The owners, Sarah and Kelly, tell James about their love for Korean food and how they have fused it with traditional deli sandwiches. They show James how to make their signature dish, the "Kim Jong-Illest" sandwich, which features bulgogi beef, kimchi, and American cheese on a toasted hoagie roll. James also tries the "Spam Bao," a Chinese steamed bun filled with crispy Spam, hoisin sauce, and pickled carrots. James is amazed at how Sarah and Kelly have taken two very different food cultures and combined them to create something truly unique.

Overall, episode 5 of season 3 of Eat St. delivers a deli-themed tour that is sure to make viewers' mouths water. Viewers get to see how each food truck owner has put their own spin on classic deli fare, resulting in some truly exceptional dishes. From the "Underground" sandwich to the "Kim Jong-Illest" sandwich, there is something for everyone in this episode.
