Three enlisted brothers find themselves stationed together at an Army base in Florida, much to their varying levels of comfort. The show follows a group of lively soldiers living in the Rear Detachment (Rear D) unit, which is tasked with taking care of the families of deployed soldiers, as well as various menial jobs and tasks. In episode 5, titled "Rear D Day," the Rear D unit has been given the task of organizing and hosting the base's upcoming family day, which the brothers are excited to participate in. The challenge, however, will be coordinating with the regular army unit in order to make sure everything goes off without a hitch.
The episode opens with Chief Cody leading a workout session that the Rear D unit has started called "Sweaties." Despite the disinterest and grumbling of some members, including Randy, the chief is determined to keep everyone motivated and in shape. Meanwhile, Pete is busy being love-struck over a woman he's met online, but she's too busy to meet him in person. She suggests they video chat instead, which he excitedly agrees to, but much to his dismay, the Rear D internet is far too slow to support the call.
Sergeant Hill is tasked with coordinating the family day event and is determined to make it go smoothly. He assigns each member of the Rear D unit a specific responsibility and task to ensure everything runs like clockwork. However, Randy is disappointed when he is assigned to the "Carny Tent," a task he deems beneath him. Meanwhile, Derrick is tasked with coordinating with the regular army unit to ensure that everybody is on the same page.
Things start to go awry when a team-building exercise between the Rear D unit and the regular army unit devolves into chaos when Pvt. Dobkiss, a member of the regular army, accidentally injures himself. The Rear D unit is blamed, and tensions begin to rise between the two groups.
As the day of the family day event approaches, the Rear D unit begins to realize that there are still several big obstacles standing in their way. Most pressing is the fact that they don't have a bounce house for the kids, and the one that the regular army unit has rented has fallen through. After several failed attempts to rectify the situation, the Rear D unit finally comes together and constructs a makeshift bounce house out of tarps and duct tape.
As the event kicks off, everything seems to be running smoothly until the bounce house collapses, sending a group of kids tumbling out and injuring them. The regular army unit is quick to blame the Rear D unit for the incident and tensions once again rise. However, the Rear D unit comes together to take responsibility for the incident and realizes that the true meaning of family day is not about the event or the activities, but about coming together as a community and supporting one another.
"Rear D Day" is a heartwarming episode that showcases the bonds that can form between people who may have never met otherwise. While the Rear D unit may have started off as a group of people who didn't know each other well, they have come together as a team and are determined to support one another, despite the obstacles that may come their way. Through teamwork and perseverance, the Rear D unit proves that even the most seemingly insurmountable challenges can be overcome.
