Ep 3. The Can Opener

Ray Barone is at odds with his mother Marie, again. This time, it is because Marie gifted Ray's brother Robert a can opener that Ray wanted for himself. Marie claims she forgot, but Ray is not convinced. He accuses Marie of intentionally playing favorites and causing conflicts between her children. When he brings up past examples of her showing favoritism, Marie becomes defensive, and the argument heats up.

Meanwhile, Debra tries to keep the peace by suggesting that Ray let Robert have the can opener, but Ray insists that it is not just about the can opener. It is about the principle of Marie's favoritism. Debra suggests that Ray talk things out with his mom to resolve the issue. Ray initially refuses, but eventually, he agrees to have a conversation with her.

Marie denies playing favorites and insists that she loves all of her children equally. She even shows Ray a few gifts she bought for him, but Ray is still skeptical. He tries to explain how hurtful it is when Marie takes sides, but Marie interrupts him, stating that he is overreacting. The conversation does not go well, and Ray leaves feeling frustrated.

Later, Ray and Debra are having a dinner party with their friends when Robert shows up unannounced and drunk. He accidentally breaks the can opener in question, causing Ray to lose his temper. He goes on a tirade, accusing Robert of being irresponsible and blaming Marie for the whole ordeal.

Debra tries to intervene, but Ray is beyond reasoning with. In a fit of anger, Ray grabs a knife and threatens to stab Robert. Debra and their friends are horrified and try to calm Ray down. Eventually, Robert leaves and the party ends abruptly.

The next day, Ray acknowledges that he overreacted and apologizes to Debra for his behavior. They agree that the whole situation was silly and that it is time to move on. However, when Ray sees Marie, they exchange tense looks, indicating that their problems are far from resolved.
