Ray Barone is a mildly successful sportswriter who is married to his wife Debra, and has three children, Ally, Michael, and Geoffrey. They live across the street from his parents, Frank and Marie Barone, who frequently visit their home.

In the fifth season's sixth episode, titled "The Author," Ray's father Frank reveals that he has written a book, and is seeking to publish it. Ray is initially skeptical of the quality of his father's work, but after reading it, finds himself surprisingly impressed. He is even more surprised after discovering that his father's book is about him, his family, and their neighbors. Frank's book is a thinly veiled portrayal of his son's life, with Ray's character in the book being named "Phil."

As Ray reads through the book, he becomes increasingly upset with the unflattering portrayal of himself, his mother, and his wife. He begins to worry about how his friends and colleagues will perceive him after reading the book, and decides to confront his father about it. However, Frank is resistant to his son's criticism, and insists that his book is a work of art, not an attack on his family.

Ray's wife Debra also becomes upset by Frank's book, and convinces Ray to stand up to his father and demand that he abandon the project. However, Ray's mother Marie is more understanding of her husband's creative endeavors, and tries to mediate the situation. She suggests that Frank rewrite the book to make it more positive, and includes a chapter about how much he loves his family.

In the end, Frank agrees to make the changes suggested by Marie, and Ray is satisfied that his family's reputation will not be tarnished. However, he remains skeptical of his father's artistic abilities, and is uncertain if anyone will actually want to read the revised version of his book.

"The Author" is an entertaining and insightful episode of Everybody Loves Raymond, as it explores the tensions that arise when family members write about each other. The episode offers a humorous and relatable take on the creative process, and how it can sometimes conflict with personal relationships. Fans of the show are sure to enjoy this installment, as it showcases the wonderful ensemble cast and the witty writing that made the series a classic.
